Day 1: Pick up in the morning at 4.30 am from your coastal hotel; drive via the Nairobi-Mombasa highway to Amboseli National Park; on-route sanitary stopover at Voi Town. Arrive at the gate of Amboseli for mid-morning game on-route leading you to Luxurious Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge for lunch.

Afternoon game viewing drives take you to the historical Observation Hill, where almost the whole park can be seen from an elevated position facing Mt. Kilimanjaro in one awe-impessing view. Kenya lies astride the equator on the coast of East Africa. By continental standards it is a medium sized country covering an area of 586.600 square km. Inland water bodies covers some 10.700sq km, of which the bulk of this is found in the fresh water lakes, Victoria and Turkana. Kenya has an enormous topographical diversity including the Great Rift Valley with its scarps and volcanoes, ancient granitic hills, flat desert landscapes, coral reefs and islets. Mount Kenya, with its snow-capped glaciated mountain peaks, offers many possibilities for mountain climbers.

With the equator crossing Kenya, in general Kenya has a tropical climate. The coast is tropical warm, northern and eastern Kenya is hot and dry, and on the central highlands it can be chilly. Across most parts of Kenya rainfall is strongly seasonal, the pattern, time and extend vary greatly from place to place and from year to year. Most areas have a peak in rainfall during April and November.

Kenya has one of Africa’s most extensive domestic travel networks with plenty of options for travellers to choose from. Whether you are looking for the speed of flights, the service and comfort private safari vans, public transport of busses and matatus. Kenya has three international airports: Jomo Kenyatta in Nairobi, Moi in Mombasa & Kilimanjaro near the Tanzanian border. A sufficient number of domestic airports are located on coast to connect to Kenya’s major wildlife parks and western Kenya. Carriers such as Kenya Airways, Mombasa Air Safari, Fly 540, East African Safari Air and Safarilink opperate domestic flights.

In Nairobi and Mombasa taxis are widely available. Often they are parked near hotels / tourist areas. In Nairobi taxis are marked with a yellow line, in other areas taxis can’t always be distinguished. Taxis do not have a meter; the price should be agreed before departure to prevent confusion on arrival. For local travellers on short distances there are ‘piki-pikis’ (motorbike), boda-bodas (bicycles), and tuc-tucs available for short distances in urban areas.

Busses can be boarded at any stop, and at any time. Tickets can be purchased on board on or be reserved at booking offices. Busses regularly run between most cities and several bus companies perform International routes to Uganda, Ethiopia and Tanzania. Some bus companies offer private shuttle services on routes between Nairobi and Mombasa - Nairobi and Arusha (Tanzania), as well as city airports and city hotels.

The most popular and affordable mean of public transport for local Kenyans is called the matatu. Brightly painted matatu minivans have become a national icon and an important part of modern Kenyan Culture. The vehicles are often spectacularly painted in designs based on western album covers logos. Matatus operate on set routes to collect as much passengers as possible. Officially they have 14 seats to carry passengers, though on rush hours you can easily find 20 people sharing those same, already squeezed, 14 seats. In general matatu minibuses have a crew of two, a driver and a conductor.

Kenyan Railway Company connects Mombasa, via Tsavo, to Nairobi and further from Nairobi, via Great Rift Valley to Kisumu in Western Kenya, than it continues up to Uganda, Kampala. The train only drives at night, and is often included in safari itineraries. Nairobi is most centrally located between Kenya’s wildlife parks and Mombasa boasts with fine beaches and resorts.

The ‘Iron Snake of Africa’ departs from Nairobi to Mombasa on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays, than back the following day. Travelling First Class includes your own private cabin for two, diner, beding and breakfast on board. The ‘Iron Snake’ dates from the 50’s and it provides a scenic journey for both budged travellers and adventure seekers.

Travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa, you wake up at sunset in the middle of Tsavo’s wilderness, with interruptions on the way caused by Elephants or Buffalos blocking the railway before reaching your destination: the tropical beaches of Mombasa’s north and south coast.

Most of your time spent on safari you will be in the bush. Being on a safari is an exclusive event and

A wide spread misperception is that Tented Camps are per definition more basic than Lodges, in fact, many Luxurious Tented Camps offer a higher level of service and offer a much better experience than some Lodges do. It is important to consider when you plan your safari.

Private or Group Safari?

Over the years our Guests wishes in general have changed. Most popular in the past, and wildly available, were group safaris. Presently group safaris have lost their favour and travellers seek a more intimate experience by choosing private safaris. What is the difference?

Group Safaris are more cost efficient. Renting a vehicle and sharing other costs in transport will result in a significant lower price per person. A disadvantage is you have to follow the planned itinerary with others in your group, though our safari hosts will always do their level best to comfort all participants he guides.

Presently Private Safaris have the favour over group safaris by most safari travellers. Main reason to spend an extra amount on a safari are personal services from a guide, the freedom to decide to go where you wand. Lastly, but most important are the personal wishes and demands of individual travellers.

Masai Mara Migration

Masai Mara's Great Migration, it is the most spectacular and dramatic wildlife phenomenal in the word. It concerns the annual mass movement of more than a million Wildebeests, Zebras and Antelopes. In search of greener pastures the massive herds circle a 3500 kilometer route over the plains of the bordering Serengeti in Tanzania, across theMara River into Kenya's Masai Mara Game Reserve, to return back later in the year.

During long rains in April & May the endless golden grassland plains of the MasaiMara have become green. Instinctively the massive herds start to trek, and enter the Masai Mara begin of July. Witnessing the immense migrating herds, their rumbling hooves, shaking ground and clouds of dust, leave intense memories behind for its viewers. After the plains in the Serengeti have become green again the herd resumes their trek crossing the Mara River into the Serengeti around September/October.

After giving birth to a proximally 300.000 calves per day in the Ngorogoro Crater, the Wildebeest herds once again resume their eternal trek towards the greener plains of the Masai Mara in January. While crossing the Mara River many animals will fall pray to the steep banks of theMara River and drown.

Packs of giant Crocodiles lie in the river waiting for their chances to snatch a potential pray. Once the exhausted herds and their offspring have survived the dangerous crossing, even more danger will lie ahead! With a distinct smell of haste & hunger, big cats like Lions, Leopards and Cheetahs roam around the herds in numerous numbers to catch aweak or unaware animal. Many of the young calves do not make the crossing.

With predators on there backs, for many their circle of live called the Great Migration will end this year. Though, the herd is strong, and they will continue to trek the same route, as they have done for ages, and they will continue to do so, for as long as they may roam on planet earth!

Tsavo East Safari

Day 1: pick up from your beach hotel from 7.00 am and depart to Tsavo EastNational Park. Enter through Buchuma gate and drive on - route game viewing to your luxurious camp or lodge for lunch. Enjoy lunch and views from your lodge before starting your extended game drive in the afternoon. Tsavo East is home to large Elephant herds, Giraffe, Lion, Antelopes, Buffalo, Cheetah, Zebra and more wildlife animals. Return to have dinner and overnight at 6.30 pm. Day 1: depart in the early morning from your hotel on coast and drive to Tsavo WestNational Park. Reach Tsavo West gate around 10.30 am to make a mid-morning game drive on-route and reach your lodge at 12.30 pm. Lunch, relax and enjoy at the comforts of your lodge before afternoon game viewing will take you to Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. By luck you may find the shy black Rhino and 58 other mammals before you head back to your lodge at 6.00 pm for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: breakfast waits from 6.00 am, followed by a scenic game drive to the Mzima Springs. Here you'll find Hippo's, Crocodiles and Tropical Fish which can be seen from an underwater tank. During a 1-hour nature walk you can spot many bird species in the forestry area of the springs and learn more about the area. Proceed on-route returning to the gate, than head to Tsavo East National Park. After check in the park make a game drive towards your lodge/camp where you'll have lunch. Enjoy the stunning views from your lodge, explore Tsavo East game driving from 4.00 pm till 6.30 pm followed by a delicious dinner and overnight in the wild .

Day 3: after a lively cup of coffee or tea you start your day with game viewing. The early morning is the best time to spot big cats coming from a hunt at night or even with a pray. Samburu Safari

Day 1: in the early morning your safari host will pick you from your hotel and you drive north to Kenya's semi desert lands onto Samburu National Reserve. After 6 hours drive you reach your Lodge or Luxurious Camp inside Samburu for lunch. Afternoon game drives will take you to the Uaso Nyiro River where Nile Crocodiles await in the river to snatch plain animals such as Waterbucks, Zebras, Buffalos and Antelopes. Have dinner and overnight at your Luxurious Camp or Lodge.

Day 2: a full day Samburu excursion in search for Samburu's 'Special 5' starts with game viewing in the early morning hours before breakfast. Samburu's shier wildlife species, Grevy's Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Somali Ostrich, Beisa Oryx and Gerenuk Antelope are typical animals only to be found in this sub-Sahara desert area. Lunch will be ready at your lodge from midday, followed by a rest to escape the searing heat of the sun until 16.00 pm. Afternoon game drives at 16.00 pm till 18.00 pm before dinner is being served.

Your scenic drive will take around 5 to 6 hours through the Great Rift, and before you've reached the actual reserve you've spotted Wildebeest, Buffalos, and Giraffes. Reach your Lodge or Luxurious Tented Camp in time for lunch, followed by a game drive till dusk.

Day 2: start your day with a lively cup of coffee or tee before breakfast, take a lunchbox from the reception and leave for a full day game driving till late afternoon with picnic lunch in the bush. Tourist Visas
Tourists visiting Kenya require a tourist - or transit visa which can be obtained on entry at the Airports in Mombasa or Nairobi. You can purchase your visa in advance from Kenya embassies in your Country of Residence.

Medical Requirements
It is advisable to check with your doctor at least a month before your travel to get recommendations and advice. Anti malarial drugs are strongly recommended. Before departure check if you've packed your personal medication with a copy of the descriptions.

Insurances
It is most recommended that all travellers arrange their personal travel insurance to cover medical, property and other personal risks for the duration of their holiday and safari.

Temporary membership of the Flying Doctor Service, based in Nairobi and providing cover in Kenya and northern Tanzania can be arranged at a modest cost on request.

Language
The official languages of Kenya are Kiswahili and English. Most of our driver guides, hotel staff, etc. also speak German, French and other languages. Moreover, 42 tribal languages are spoken all over Kenya.

Currency and Exchange
The Kenyan currency is Kenya Shilling (KSh). Payments for safaris can be made in EUR, USD, GBP and others. There are numerous banks and bureaux de change in towns with reasonable rates. Lodges / Hotels will exchange currency at higher rates.

Local items and services are priced and paid in KSh, it is advisable to convert funds into the local currency for incidental expenses on arrival in Kenya. Credit cards are only accepted in some establishments. The use of credit cards in banks only gives KSh. The use of Traveller Cheques is virtually not possible.

Electricity
The power supply is at the UK/European standard voltage of 220/240, and power sockets are the U.K. square pin type. To use U.S. appliances a voltage convertor and a plug convertor will be needed. Mains power supply is subject to cuts and voltage fluctuation.

On safari, most lodges supply power from generators, and these are often turned off during parts of the day and night to reduce noise and fuel consumption.

Drinking Water
It is recommended to drink only bottled mineral water which is available everywhere.

Climate
Kenya is an equatorial country, hence little seasonal variation in temperature which is experienced between coastal and low lying regions, and the high plains and mountain regions.

There are two seasons: dry season and rainy season with long rains in April and May, and short rains in November. In practice, the rainfalls are unpredictable. Generally, during rainy seasons the rain often falls in tropical downpours during the night or evenings with pleasant sunny days in between.

Public Transportation
There are local buses and minibuses which are likely to be uncomfortable, overcrowded and potentially dangerous.

Better hotels generally have a superior selection of taxis available, and it is advisable that you obtain one of these, particularly for longer journeys.

There is a railway link between Nairobi and Mombasa just on specific days, i.e. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Nairobi to Mombasa and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Mombasa to Nairobi. These are night journeys.

Alcoholic Drinks
In general, there are no restrictions on the sale or consumption of alcoholic drinks; however, in some areas such as Muslim villages alcohol is restricted.

Masai Mara Safari

Day 1: Pick up from your Nairobi City Hotel or Airport in the morning and make a scenic drive through the Great Rift Valley to the southern Serengeti Plains. Arrive atNarok Town and start game driving to Sopa Lodge to have lunch. Sopa is located in an area which attracts lots of plain animals the year round. After a short afternoon game drive dinner and overnight await you at 6.30 pm.

Day 2: Leave Sopa Lodge in the morning at sunrise after a cup of coffee or tea. After breakfast at 8.00 am you take your lunchboxes from the reception and leave for a full day game viewing with lunch in the bush. Dinner and overnight will be ready at 6.30 pm.

Day 4: let yourself sink in an extensive early morning game drive with breakfast in the bush. Leave the Mara on-route towards Nairobi where you’ll arrive in time for late lunch at your City Hotel.

Tsavo West, Amboseli & Ngutuni Safari

Day 1: leave you coastal hotel early in the morning from 4.00 am to Amboseli NP. Make on-route game drive to Sopa Lodge for check in and lunch at 1.30 pm. Rest a little and make game drives from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm, than return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: pre-breakfast game drives at 6.30 am after a cup of coffee or tea. Breakfast at 8.00 am is followed by on-route game drives to Tsavo West NP. Reach Ngulia Safari Lodge in time for lunch with stunning views over Rhino Valley. Afternoon game viewing includes a visit to the Rhino Valley where by luck you’ll see the illusive Black Rhino and 58 other large mammals. Dive back at 6.00 pm and arrive in time for dinner and overnight at 7.30 pm.

Day 3: have early breakfast followed by on-route game drives through Tsavo West to the Mzima Springs. Make a 1-hour nature walk in the forestry area with Hippos and Crocodiles lazing in the springs and can be seen from an underwater tank. Proceed game driving on-route to the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway onto Ngutuni Sanctuary for game drives and lunch. Enjoy the views from the Luxurious Lodge overlooking a waterhole. Than depart back to Coast where you will arrive at your beach hotel in the late afternoon.

Tsavo East Safari

Day 1: depart at 1.00 pm from your beach hotel and leave Mombasa through theNairobi-Mombasa Highway. Arrive at Tsavo East NP at 3.00 pm, and make extensive game drives in the afternoon till sundown at 6.30 pm. An extensive game drive is a great opportunity to look for huge Red Elephants, Lions, Buffalos, Zebras and other wild animals in their natural habitat. Check in your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Pre breakfast game drives start from 6.00 am, followed by breakfast at 08.00 am. Than make a small on-route game drive out of the park, connect to the highway, and arrive back in your coastal hotel before lunch.

Taita Hills & Tsavo East Safari

onto Voi Town, and proceed to Taita Hills Saltlick Game Lodge. Make a midmorning game drive to Saltlick Lodge viewing Elephants, Wildebeests, Antelopes, and Zebras. Have lunch in the open-dining area of Saltlick lodge, from where you enjoy stunning views over Taita's Savannah and a saltlick below where plain animals come to quench their thirst. In the afternoon at 4.00 pm you make a game drive in the sanctuary till 6.30 pm, with a good chance to see lions before dinner will be ready at Saltlick.

Day 2: have breakfast, adjoined by game viewing and drive to Tsavo East NP. Reach on-route to Ashnil Aruba Lodge for lunch at 12.30 pm. Rest a little and watch game at Aruba Dam, a man-made waterhole during the heat of the day. Start afternoon game viewing from 4.00 pm till 6.30 pm in search of Tsavo's huge Red-Elephants and other game before dinner and overnight at Ashnil Aruba Lodge.

Day 3: Wake up early for breakfast, and have one more chance to view predators coming from a hunt at night. Leave the Park and drive back to your Beach Hotel arriving late in the morning before lunch.

Mount Kenya Trekking Routes

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain of Kenya and the world’s highest standing mountain on the equator. Mt Kenya offers a wealth of gracious landscapes and excellent climbing opportunities on rock, ice and snow. With Mt Kenya’s towering height of 5199 meters above sea level, Mount Kenya has three main peaks, Batian at 5,199m, Nelion at 5,188m and point Lenana at 4,985m. Of these main peaks, only point Lenana (4,985m) can be reached by trekkers. The two other Mount Kenya summits, Batain and Nelion, are only for technical climbers. Other major summits on Mount Kenya include Point Piggott (4,957m), Point Dutton (4,885) and Point John (4,883m).

Mount Kenya is about 60km across, and circular at the 200m contour where steep font hills rise out of the gentler slopes of the centred highlands. At the centre of the massif the main peaks rise sharply from around 4,500m to Mt Kenya’s main summit of Batian at 5,199m. After the cultivated farmlands on the lower slopes of Mt. Kenya, the trails pass through the rain forest, rich in trees of many species but noticeably camphor, then onto a bamboo zone growing to heights of more than 12m, and than more up through open moorland before you reach the surrealistic Alpine moonscape of the higher slopes of Mt Kenya.

Apart from the superb climbing potential on Mount Kenya with its tarns and alpine meadows; exotic, equatorial, high-altitude vegetation including giant groundsels and lobelias; sunbirds and soaring eagles make the walk around Kenya’s mountain peaks. The lower forests are rich in wildlife including Elephant, Buffalo Lions, Leopard, various Antelopes and a wide range of other creatures, large and small; occur in Mt Kenya National Park. Even the higher moor lands offer a long list of interesting mammals including the illusive Bongo and Rock Hyrax, which the nearest living relative of the Elephant.

Mount Kenya can be climbed all year round. The highest rainfall is from March to middle of May and occurs in the forest belt on the south-east side of the mountain where it reaches 2500mm. per year at 3000m height. Slightly less rain occurs between late October and mid December. Even in the driest periods in January and February, rain and, higher up, snow can be encountered at any time of year. If any, rains tends to fall in the mid-afternoon thus the best weather is generally in the mornings.

There are three main routes on Mt Kenya which penetrate the forest and moorland. The routes are Mount Kenya Naro Moru Route, the Sirimon route and Chogoria route. Each of these routes has something different to offer for mountaineers. The fastest and most popular route to point Lenana, but not as scenic as the other two, is the Mount Kenya Naromoru route. It is often overcrowded with many climbers. This route takes 4 Days to reach Point Lenana.

The least used of the three main routes, but features the most gradual ascent profile and best acclimatisation options is the Mount Kenya Sirimon Route. Above all the Sirimon Route is most interesting since it’s on the drier side on the mountain. The route passes through impressive Yellowwood forests in the lower reaches and features abundant wildlife, and higher up, a beautiful alpine scenery. This route takes 4 or 5 days to reach Point Lenana.

The route passing the enchanting Hall Tarns and looks down sheer cliffs into the spectacular Gorges Valley and onto the beautiful Lake Michaelson is the Mount Kenya Chogoria Route. Chogoria is the most scenic and interesting of these three main routes on the Mount Kenya. This route takes 5 or 6 days to hike to Point Lenana.
